Loch of Vigga is a freshwater loch located on the island of Shetland, Scotland. Situated in the central part of the mainland, it lies approximately 7 miles northeast of the town of Scalloway. The loch is nestled within a picturesque landscape, surrounded by rolling hills and heather-covered moorland.

Covering an area of approximately 70 acres, Loch of Vigga is relatively small in size. It is a shallow loch with an average depth of around 6 feet, although certain areas can reach depths of up to 12 feet. The water in the loch is clear and pristine, providing a habitat for various species of fish, including trout and sticklebacks.

The surrounding area of Loch of Vigga is rich in wildlife, with several species of birds making their home there. It is a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) due to its importance as a breeding ground for a variety of waterfowl, such as red-throated divers, tufted ducks, and great crested grebes. The loch is also frequented by migratory birds, including whooper swans and teal.

Vegetation around the loch includes reed beds, rushes, and water lilies, creating a diverse freshwater marsh ecosystem. The marshy areas provide a habitat for amphibians, such as frogs and newts, and attract insects like dragonflies and damselflies.

Loch of Vigga is a popular spot for outdoor enthusiasts, offering opportunities for fishing, birdwatching, and scenic walks. The tranquil surroundings and abundant wildlife make it a must-visit destination for nature lovers and those seeking a peaceful retreat in the heart of Shetland.
