Duddo Hill

Duddo Tower It was originally a 15th century stone tower house and barmkin, but only a fragment of it still remains.

It was built by the Clavering family and stood in a commanding position overlooking the village, but back in 1496, King James IV of Scotland destroyed it. It was then integrated into a L-shaped tower house and the remains that stand here today probably date to the late 16th century.

Duddo Hill, located in the county of Northumberland, England, is a prominent landmark known for its distinctive five Neolithic stone circles situated at its summit. Rising to an elevation of approximately 289 meters (948 feet), the hill offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.

The stone circles, dating back to around 2000 BC, are believed to have served as burial sites or religious ceremonial areas. Consisting of large upright stones, the circles vary in size, with the largest measuring around 10 meters (33 feet) in diameter. The stones themselves are predominantly sandstone, adding to the striking visual appeal of the site.

Duddo Hill is surrounded by rolling farmland, providing a picturesque backdrop to the ancient stone circles. The landscape is characterized by gentle slopes and a patchwork of agricultural fields, which are predominantly used for grazing livestock.

The hill is a popular destination for walkers, hikers, and nature enthusiasts, offering a range of footpaths and trails for exploration. Visitors can enjoy a leisurely stroll through the surrounding countryside or embark on more challenging hikes to take in the stunning vistas from the summit.

Duddo Hill also holds significant geological importance, as it is composed of Whin Sill, a type of igneous rock that extends across the region. This rock formation is notable for its durability, which has resulted in the hill's distinctive shape and resistance to erosion.

Overall, Duddo Hill is an intriguing blend of natural beauty, archaeological significance, and geological interest, making it a captivating destination for those seeking to immerse themselves in the rich history and stunning landscapes of Northumberland.
