Newmill and Carmont Level Crossing From here, I noted that the level crossing gates were closed, and wondered if I would be able to get through. However as I approached they lifted, and I realised that the signal box is staffed. Compare this with NO7883 : Carmont station (site), 1988 taken 25 years earlier. Notice that the signal box has been extended - you can see that the work was being started in 1988 - and the old semaphore signal has gone. Newmill seems to have been renovated and converted to housing.

Signalbox at Carmont The signal box is staffed, and the signalman was happy to chat for a few minutes as no trains were due for twenty minutes or so. This is the main line to and from Aberdeen, so it is moderately busy.
