River Derwent, Borrowash

Looking downstream from Derwent Bridge. The Derwent is a major Derbyshire river, rising on Bleaklow in the north of the county and flowing southwards to its confluence with the River Trent. For much of its course it passes through the Derbyshire hills but the character changes below Derby where it runs through the broad flat valley seen in this view with some extravagant meanders.

New plaques on Borrowash Bridge

Borrowash Bridge

Borrowash Bridge is the last road crossing of the River Derwent before it reaches the River Trent. The bridge carries the B5010 between Borrowash and Elvaston. It was first opened in 1898 but is not wide enough for modern traffic so the roadway is controlled by traffic lights.

The position is an approximation. This is the display stand of the Claymills Victorian Pumping Station and a little steam engine was later on display with steam piped from the adjoining steam roller. The stand attracted some interest and a good number of leaflets were handed out during the course of two days.

Then position is an approximation. The stand was being hosted by the Claymills Victorian Pumping Station. There is a small steam engine from Claymills between the gazebo and the steam roller. This was being supplied with steam from the roller and helping to attract people to the stand. Quite a lot of interest was generated and a good number of leaflets were handed out.

Elvaston Castle Steam Rally

This little steam engine was with the display hosted by the Claymills Victorian Pumping Station. It was being prepared to run with steam supplied by the steam roller to its left. It was built in 1908 as a 'spare' barring engine and had been stored by the site's former chief engineer. When he passed away it was returned to Claymills and is in as new condition. It was later towed around the display ring by a miniature traction engine.

Elvaston Castle Steam Rally

The position is a best guess. The 6" scale Savage traction engine is towing a (not so!) stationary steam engine from Claymills Victorian Pumping Station. This was built in 1908 by the Repton Roller Mower Company as a 'spare' barring engine and is in as new condition. It was the only stationary steam engine at the rally and there was only one small portable steam engine as well.

The position is an approximation. The only portable (as opposed to self-propelled) steam engine at the event was this single cylinder Brown & May that was probably built not later than 1868. A lovely little engine that has been on the scene for many years.

Elvaston Castle Steam Rally - Nessie

The position is an approximation. Nessie has been restored by Thomas Fields-Pattinson and is a 1923 Aveling & Porter tractor (No. 9435) that spent over 60 years in Loch Ness. The quality of the restoration is outstanding and I think this was the first time I saw it although it has been to Claymills Victorian Pumping Station.
