A catch at the end of East Pier, Newhaven A plaice has just been caught and the smartphones have been whipped out. The chap apparently falling over is performing a celebratory posturing dance, probably with social media posts in mind.

Old Nore Point Only a small sliver of land is in the northern end of this grid square, mostly cliffs and some rocks down below. The only other feature is the clifftop footpath that links Peacehaven with Castle Hill.

September Moon Taken on a clear evening from the Newhaven Coastguard lookout post. The waves just past the lighthouse are the wake from a ferry that had just entered the port. Near the horizon you can just pick out the same wake from the ferry as it travelled east to west in an arc to enter the port.

The beach, Newhaven The only sandy beach for miles is very popular, mainly with locals, on a pleasant summer's day. Seaford Head is in the distance.

Newhaven cliffs geology To quote a University of Brighton website: "At Newhaven, early Tertiary sandstones and clays mantle the cliff top immediately west of the harbour". The mantle is above the familiar chalk of most cliffs around here. "The weak clays, in particular, are prone to landsliding, occasionally spilling over the cliff edge".

Newhaven Harbour It is unusual to see such rough water inside the harbour arm, I was told that it was due to a combination of easterly wind and tidal surge.

Western Breakwater Constructed in 1880 to protect the newly developed port of Newhaven. It has also allowed the growth of sandy beach which unfortunately has been closed to public access by the current port owners along with the breakwater.
