Path from the car park to the pond at Pen-y-fan Pond

The car parking area is large and this path makes directly for the lake, where most visitors are happy to make for. The country park seems popular with locals, dog walkers, joggers, horse-riders, fly-fishermen and walkers. No cyclists spotted today I'm afraid.

This rounded boulder is a glacial erratic deposited on the ground surface here at the end of the Last Ice Age, a melting ice sheet having carried it southwards from the Brecon Beacons. It doesn't match local geology, but has been matched with rock from the Beacons. Pen-y-fan Pond is man made, being constructed in 1745 as a canal reservoir, holding water that could be added to the then new Monmouthshire & Brecon Canal which ran from Brecon to Newport Docks.

The pond looks natural but is man made, starting life in 1745 as a canal reservoir for the Mon & Brec Canal. Today it is a valuable leisure resource for locals and visitors and a valuable wildlife haven.
