Other mills then sprang up in the area and were said to make the finest gunpowder in Europe, supplying the British Army right up to the Crimean War. Tower of St Laurence's Church, Catsfield Ian Nairn in his Pevsner guide of 1965 wrote: "St Laurence is humble, with a Norman nave ... a west tower of ca. 1200 (with later shingled broach spire) and an Early English chancel.  The tower has a characteristic west doorway with a broad convex quadrant moulding."
