Newnham Park Wood is a picturesque woodland located in Sussex, England. Situated in the heart of the South Downs National Park, this forested area covers an expansive 100 acres of land. The wood is a haven for nature enthusiasts, offering a diverse range of flora and fauna.

One of the most striking features of Newnham Park Wood is its ancient woodland status. This means that the area has been continuously wooded for at least 400 years, providing a unique and ecologically rich habitat. The wood is predominantly composed of broadleaf trees, such as oak, beech, and ash, which create a dense canopy overhead. The forest floor is adorned with a carpet of wildflowers during the spring and summer months, adding bursts of color to the tranquil surroundings.

The wood is crisscrossed by a network of walking trails, allowing visitors to explore the natural beauty at their own pace. These pathways offer breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside, including rolling hills and meandering rivers. The variety of wildlife that can be spotted in Newnham Park Wood is truly remarkable. From deer and badgers to a myriad of bird species, the forest is teeming with life.

Managed by the Sussex Wildlife Trust, Newnham Park Wood is a designated Local Nature Reserve. This ensures that the forest is protected and preserved for future generations to enjoy. The trust also organizes educational programs and events to raise awareness about the importance of woodland conservation.

Overall, Newnham Park Wood is a captivating destination for those seeking a peaceful retreat in the heart of nature. With its ancient woodland status, diverse wildlife, and stunning scenery, it truly embodies the essence of Sussex's natural beauty.

Ford on footpath Rotherfield 51 The otherwise excellent East Sussex interactive rights of way map marks this with a bridge, so does the OS map. There was no sign here of there ever being a bridge. Perhaps it lurks in the undergrowth a little further up the stream?

Gill stream junction It is rather hard to get a sense of scale here, but the fallen tree on the right is of some size. The main gill stream comes down from the right and is joined by a side stream falling over a substantial seam of sandstone.
