Static display at Duxford Airfield During the late 1960's The Imperial War Museum was looking for a suitable site for the storage, restoration and eventual display of exhibits too large for its headquarters in London. It settled on RAF Duxford which was about to be decommissioned by the Ministry of Defence. Here we see some of those exhibits.

Parallel to it and nearer the viewer is 06/24 grass strip 890 m by 53 m. Both the tailwheel equipped aircraft Cessna 170B and Vickers-Supermarine Spitfire have landed on the grass runway as befits their undercarriage configuration. They are now parked close to the paved taxiway in the immediate foreground.

Concorde in the AirSpace Hangar, Duxford This huge hangar at the Imperial War Museum Duxford houses many planes, large and small, old and (fairly) new. The Concorde seen here never went into service, it was one of (I think) two that were prototypes and used for testing before the actual fleet of Concordes was built. This prototype had two escape hatches for the crew, a feature which, for obvious reasons, was not included in the commercial version!
I have flown (just the once!) on Concorde, from New York to Heathrow in June 1989. So it was nostalgic to see the cabin again, and interesting to look into the cockpit. One thing that I did recall was confirmed: the seats were really quite narrow, and the cabin quite confined. I think modern businessmen prefer their space and flat beds even if the travel time is greater.
I like to think that, at a height of nearly 20 kilometres, I did actually see the earth's curvature. But it may well just have been distortion in the thick, small plastic windows.

The Officers' Mess, Duxford Camp This building has been used until quite recently, though not as an Officers' Mess. But I understand that the roof now leaks, and funds are not available to renovate it to a standard which would permit it to be occupied once again.
