Moat Shaw is a picturesque woodland located in Sussex, England. Nestled amidst the rolling hills and verdant countryside, it is a haven for nature enthusiasts and those seeking tranquility. The forest covers an area of approximately 500 acres, making it a substantial and diverse ecosystem.

The woodlands of Moat Shaw boast a rich variety of flora and fauna. Towering oak, beech, and ash trees dominate the landscape, their sprawling branches providing a lush canopy overhead. Underneath, a carpet of wildflowers, ferns, and mosses add a burst of color to the forest floor. The air is filled with the melodious songs of numerous bird species, and lucky visitors may even spot elusive creatures such as deer, foxes, and squirrels.

The woodland is crisscrossed with well-maintained footpaths, making it a popular destination for walkers and hikers. These trails wind their way through the forest, leading visitors past babbling brooks, ancient stone walls, and hidden clearings. One of the highlights of Moat Shaw is its namesake, a small moat that once surrounded a long-gone medieval manor. Today, the moat remains partially intact, creating an enchanting sight that harks back to the area's history.

Moat Shaw is not only a natural treasure but also a site of cultural significance. Archaeological evidence suggests that the woodlands were inhabited as early as the Iron Age, and remnants of ancient settlements and burial mounds can still be found within its boundaries. This blend of natural beauty and historical interest makes Moat Shaw a truly unique destination for anyone seeking to explore the wonders of Sussex.

Bridge over the railway line Maps will have to be redrawn once the track and line are finished between Kingscote and East Grinstead stations. This line was one of the first to be 'axed' by Dr Beeching and subsequently was taken on by the Bluebell Line volunteers and enthusiasts. So soon you can change trains at East Grinstead to take the steam train all the way to Sheffield Park.
