Scientific Names : Ranunculus ficaria Other names: pilewort, small celandine, smallwort, figwort, brighteye, butter and cheese Nicholas Culpepper (17th century astrologer-physician) "The decoction of the leaves and root doth wonderfully help piles and haemorrhoids, also kernels by the ears and throat, called the king's-evil, or any other hard wens or tumours. Pilewort made into an oil, ointment or plaister cures pilesor haemorrhoids and the king's-evil. I cured my own daughter of the king's-evil, broke the sore, drew out a quarter of a pint of corruption and she was cured without any scar at all in one week's time"

DEFRA conservation walk near Irnham The circular conservation walk linking Irnham and Corby Glen follows the public footpath alongside this stream. There are a variety of habitats along this southerly section of the walk ranging from open fields to mixed woodland.

Through the trees Just past the bridge in <a href="https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/384798">TF0224 : Swinstead Road</a> there is a narrow strip of woodland either side of the road. Looking east from the bridge through the trees you can see the southern part of Irnham Pasture, a group of fields ranged along the road, and beyond, the rising ground towards Norwood Farm in <a href="https://www.geograph.org.uk/gridref/TF0324">TF0324</a>. Norwood itself can be seen on the horizon.

Looking east from the bridge through the trees you can see the southern part of Irnham Pasture, a group of fields ranged along the road, and beyond, the rising ground towards Norwood Farm in TF0324. Norwood itself can be seen on the horizon.

Often these walks digress from established rights of way but in this case the circular walk linking Irnham and Corby Glen follows the public footpaths and bridleways. The 1:50,000 OS map shows the footpath following the southerly bank of the stream and the 1:25,000 isn't much clearer. The DEFRA map on the sign at the access point here clearly shows the path following the north bank along this wide field margin.
