Old mileplate It is not known if the mileplate on the wall of the Providence Inn in Yedingham on the B1258 was originally on its own backing stone like the other milemarkers along the Malton to Scarborough section of the 1752-1865 York-Malton-Scarborough turnpike. If the measured mile from Malton 8 came exactly to the pub it would save the expense of a stone! Milestones were often set up many years after the first enactment of a Turnpike Trust.
