Grand Union Canal, Braunston Although still March, the weather was sunny and warm - conditions that were to change dramatically within a week as the wind direction swung round to come from the north. Here some narrowboats are moored between the locks at Braunston, with clumps of daffodils in the foreground adjacent to the car park of the Admiral Nelson pub.

'Aldgate' at Braunston Aldgate is a traditional Grand Union narrowboat built in 1936 by Harland and Wolff at Woolwich. Braunston Tunnel Western Portal Opened in 1976, the tunnel is 2042 yards / 1867 metres long. Construction was hindered by quicksand. A directional error during the building left the tunnel with a slight bend.

The tunnel is wide enough to allow two narrowboats to pass in opposite directions. Widebeam boats must get permission before entering.
