Ecclesall Wood is a picturesque woodland located in South Yorkshire, England. Covering an area of approximately 350 acres, it is a prominent feature of the charming suburb of Ecclesall. The wood is part of the larger Ecclesall Woods, which are collectively managed by Sheffield City Council and are a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest.

The woodland is primarily composed of deciduous trees, including oak, beech, birch, and ash, giving it a vibrant and diverse appearance throughout the year. The trees form a dense canopy that provides shelter to a wide variety of wildlife, including birds, mammals, and insects. It is not uncommon to spot woodpeckers, squirrels, and even deer within the wood's boundaries.

Ecclesall Wood is a popular destination for nature enthusiasts, walkers, and joggers. It offers a network of well-maintained footpaths and trails, allowing visitors to explore its beauty while immersing themselves in the tranquility of nature. The wood is particularly enchanting in spring when it becomes a carpet of bluebells, creating a stunning sight for visitors.

Additionally, Ecclesall Wood has historical significance, with evidence of human activity dating back thousands of years. The remains of ancient trackways and boundary ditches can still be found within the wood, offering glimpses into its past.

Overall, Ecclesall Wood is a cherished natural gem of Yorkshire, offering a serene escape from the bustling city life while providing a haven for wildlife and a space for outdoor recreation for locals and visitors alike.

LMS Jubilee Class 5699 Galatea repainted as 45627 Sierra Leone Peaks Express from Preston to Derby. Coming round the tight turn off the Midland Mainline and through Dore Tunnel to the Hope Valley line the locomotive found it hard to get grip on the damp track and rising gradient towards Totley Tunnel. Maybe an odd leaf on the line too. At this point it's barely going at walking pace.
