Strensham Court, Worcestershire This picture was taken in 1972 by my Dad.
The two figures are my little brother, Ian, and I. We are aged twelve and fifteen.
My little gang and I used to mess around at Strensham Court. In the kennels (I think they were Kennels) we found a load of old wooden propellers.
We used to go all around the Court. We went down the cellars. I ran up the stairs and ran into one of the bedrooms and found that my feet had sank into the rotten floorboard up to my ankles, so I ran out best I could before I fell through the floor! We climbed on to the roof and sat on the apex of the pediment with my legs dangling over (bit scary that!).
I was fifteen at the time and some of my slightly older friends had mopeds. What we did was that we made a racing track for the mopeds in front of the Court in the long grass.
So we had little races. Someone let me ride their moped. It was great fun.
One of my friends, Jeremy Crowley, had a really old moped with bicycle brakes on the front. He was doing a bit of maintenance on the moped. He had taken off the brake block shoes and put them back on the wrong way round. Then he decided to go moped racing again. When he put the front brakes on, the brake blocks shot out of the shoes into the long grass. We looked for them but we could not find them (it was evening and getting dark). So Jeremy had to ride back to Cropthorne or Little Comberton, or wherever he lived, without any front brakes. He had to ride very gingerly, as we know, back brakes ain't that good!
