Clavering

Ford Keeper's Cottage This is known as the old ford keeper's cottage in Clavering, Essex - It has been suggested that a house that stood next to this, which burnt down in the 19th century, was the real ford keeper's cottage. I've been told that this is the smallest house in Essex.

Clavering is a picturesque village located in the county of Essex, England. Situated approximately 15 miles southeast of Cambridge and 30 miles north of London, it is nestled in the heart of the beautiful countryside. With a population of around 1,200 residents, Clavering offers a peaceful and close-knit community.

The village is known for its rich history, dating back to medieval times. Its name is derived from the Old English words "claef" and "hryng," meaning "clay ring," which refers to the ancient circular earthworks that once surrounded the settlement. These earthworks can still be seen today, providing a glimpse into Clavering's past.

One of the village's notable landmarks is St. Mary and St. Clement Church, a Grade I listed building that boasts stunning architecture and a fascinating history. The church dates back to the 12th century and features a striking tower, intricate stained glass windows, and a peaceful churchyard.

Clavering is also renowned for its culinary connections. It is the birthplace of acclaimed celebrity chef Jamie Oliver, who grew up in the village and attended the local primary school. The Cricketers, a traditional pub in the heart of Clavering, is owned by Jamie Oliver's parents and has gained a reputation for its delicious food and warm atmosphere.

Surrounded by picturesque countryside, Clavering offers plenty of opportunities for outdoor activities and exploration. The village is a gateway to the Essex Way, a long-distance footpath that winds through the stunning Essex countryside, providing walkers and hikers with breathtaking views and serene surroundings.

Overall, Clavering is a charming village that combines rich history, natural beauty, and a strong sense of community, making it an idyllic place to live or visit for those seeking a peaceful retreat.

Clavering Triangulation Pillar In "celebration" of the fact that in November 2006 the Ordnance Survey have finally decided to make available all their co-ordinate and height data for triangulation points and bench marks free of charge on line, here is an image of a totally non-descript pillar skulking away under a hedge. Looking at its rural isolation and the dense growth of the hedge I wonder when it was last used for its true purpose!

As a link to the OS site the original archive OSGB36 National Grid co-ordinates and the height of the flush bracket on the pillar above Ordnance Survey Datum Newlyn can be found by typing the grid square into the relevant page selected from here <span class="nowrap"><a title="http://benchmarks.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/pls/htmldb/f?p=111" rel="nofollow ugc noopener" href="http://benchmarks.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/pls/htmldb/f?p=111">Link</a><img style="margin-left:2px;" alt="External link" title="External link - shift click to open in new window" src="https://s1.geograph.org.uk/img/external.png" width="10" height="10"/></span>
