The Atmospheric Railway Inn, Starcross Passers-by who have no knowledge of local railway history must be puzzled by the name of this pub which stands opposite Starcross station. While Isambard Kingdom Brunel is rightly revered as one of the finest Victorian engineers, he did not always get it right and his 'atmospheric railway' system can be counted as an abject failure. The idea was that trains could be propelled by means of a partial vacuum created in a pipe that ran along the railway; the rail vehicles were connected to the pipe using a piston and the pipe was sealed with a leather flap. A series of engine houses were built to create the vacuum using steam power. The system was employed on the line between Exeter and Teignmouth from September 1847 and extended to Newton Abbot the following January. Unfortunately it proved wholly unreliable and more costly than using conventional steam engines; it was completely abandoned in less than a year. At Starcross one of the engine houses still stands and the enterprise is remembered here.
