Wood of Kininvie

Swan Necked Spirit Stills We had the pleasure of visiting quite a few distilleries on our trip to Scotland, tasting a variety of single malts. No matter what your taste in whisky, our best tour of a distillery was at Glenfiddich and the tour is free.

Wood of Kininvie is a picturesque forested area located in Banffshire, Scotland. Spanning approximately 500 acres, it is a haven for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts alike. The wood is situated near the village of Kininvie, and its proximity to the River Spey adds to its natural beauty.

The Wood of Kininvie is primarily composed of native tree species such as Scots pine, birch, and oak. These trees create a dense canopy that provides a habitat for a diverse range of flora and fauna. The forest floor is covered with a rich carpet of mosses, ferns, and wildflowers, adding to the enchanting atmosphere of the wood.

The wood is crisscrossed by a network of well-maintained walking trails, allowing visitors to explore its natural wonders. These trails take visitors through different sections of the wood, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside and the river. Birdwatching is a popular activity in the Wood of Kininvie, as it is home to various species of woodland birds, including woodpeckers, owls, and red kites.

In addition to its natural beauty, the Wood of Kininvie has significant historical and cultural value. It is believed to have been part of the hunting grounds of the ancient Picts, a mysterious Celtic people who inhabited the region. The wood also played a role in the local timber industry during the 19th and early 20th centuries.

.........for rose moles all in stipple upon trout that swim They don't come prettier than the Brown Trout of Loch Park! The loch is rich in fly life and food for the Brownie can be found in abundance; this specimen was fooled by a Deer Hair Sedge fly floated on the surface and was released to swim for another day when photographed.

Brown Trout portrait One of the most handsome in the world of fishes, this trout from Loch Park tops them all. From the look of surprise on its face to the subtlety of its stippled body it is surely a work of art. Can you see the artificial fly which is still fixed to the trout? This fish like nine of his buddies tonight was released unscathed to his home waters of Loch Park.

Dark Forest Almost the whole of this square is wooded. The steep slope down from the main road is thickly planted with Scots Pines, some of which have fallen. Fortunately the slope is quite firm underfoot, so it's not hard to walk down. The camera lies, however; it's much, much darker and gloomier in here than this image suggests.

Looking towards Lochend This steep glen is in shade for much of the time. It is partly occupied by Loch Park, and though the map shows dry land here, it's actually very wet indeed. Only a very small area around the loch and bog is open. Lochend Cottage is in the next square.
