Collins House, Rutland Square

I was going to start off by saying that this glass-fronted building was probably the only unlisted building on the prestigious Rutland Square (even the postcode here is swanky: EH1 2AA!) However, after checking online maps it is hard to know for sure. The building is shown everywhere as simply being the back of another set of listed buildings on Shandwick Place. It doesn't seem to have a number and the address is always given as shown in the title. Although the building has just one company sign on it - DLA Piper, a global law firm - according to Companies House there are 26 businesses that use Collins House as their registered company address. Whether any of these companies actually have any presence in the building itself is unclear, and to somebody not au fait with the world of big business, the setup is often quite baffling. For instance, one of the 26 companies - picked at random - is called Westwood Global Energy Limited. They provide data and information for the energy industry and their website lists four offices: London, Aberdeen, Singapore and Houston, Texas. No mention is made of Edinburgh at all so why would they choose to file all their accounts from this building? Or do DLA Piper do all that stuff for them? DLA Piper's setup is also a bit odd. They are what is known as a 'Swiss verein' business. It's all fairly complicated, but the gist of it is that if you register a business in Switzerland as an association (which is roughly what 'verein' translates as) as opposed to a 'business' business it has an individual legal entity but all worldwide branches of the Swiss-registered global brand are able to trade as if they are individual companies and the profits and losses are only accounted for at a national level. So theoretically two branches of DLA Piper could go head to head in an international legal dispute, though I doubt this happens very much, if at all. It seems to be a business structure recently favoured by mergers (DLA Piper was formed from one British and two US law firms in 2005), probably due to the formerly independent companies' worries about one expensive lawsuit brought about by a new partner bringing the new company to its knees.

Not any old architect, but Sir Norman Foster. Some of Edinburgh's old bus shelters, previously maintained and managed by Clear Channel for many years, are being replaced. New contractors JCDecaux, appointed as the city’s ‘media partner’ last year, have installed 9 hi-tech shelters, with 2.1m interactive screens, on Princes Street. They are supposed to have touch-screen technology to provide advertising and real-time information about local services, although it was not evident on this shelter; they are also to have telephone charging points. The digital bus shelter network will provide editorial recommendations on the best things to do in the city. Around the city 350 advertising bus shelters are also being upgraded.

St Bernard's Well

St Bernard’s Well was originally built in 1760. The waters of the well were once held in high repute for their medicinal virtues, and in 1788 Lord Gardenstone commissioned Alexander Nasmyth to design a new pump room. It is in the shape of a circular temple supported by ten tall columns, with a statue of Hygieia, the Greek goddess of health in the centre. It operated up until the 1940’s.
