Birkenbaud Wood

Sand Martins (Riparia riparia) Several pairs of Sand Martins have excavated nest burrows in a partly collapsed sandhill. Below the nest holes there is a beautiful example of fluvial cross-bedding in the sand. Sadly, it won't last - it will be destroyed by the next sandslide.

Common Vetch (Vicia sativa) At least I think it's V sativa ssp nigra but I am happy to be corrected. It grows in the dry sandy ground around the margins of the airfield. The long straight spine does not belong to the vetch.

Highland Gliding Club On 2 January, a glider is parked outside the hangar which has replaced the one destroyed by snow almost two years ago. The windsock shows a brisk westerly wind, and the first day's flying of 2012 is making the most of it before the threatened snowstorm arrives.

Northern Marsh Orchid (Dactylorhiza purpurella) A fine specimen of one of the commoner orchid species. This is the first time I have seen one just here, although I've been passing this spot frequently for the last 20 years.

Edit: still there three years on NJ2155 : Northern Marsh Orchid (Dactylorhiza purpurella).

Edit: thanks to farming contractors driving over the spot in the winter before last, it seems that it has been destroyed.

Gliding Club Buildings New Year's Day isn't what it used to be. This year, 2013, several people turned out to fly on the first day of the year. The last time that happened was in 2003. It turned out to be a very pleasant day, mild and with sunny intervals.

Beneath Hart Hill NJ2354 is very much a forested square. A view from the corner, a short distance into the wood from the A941. The old pines do not last long, there are commercial conifers not much further in.
