Castell Dinbych
Castell Dinbych, also known as Denbigh Castle, is a historic site located in Denbighshire, Wales. Built in the 13th century by Edward I, the castle is perched on a hilltop overlooking the town of Denbigh. It was constructed as part of Edward I's campaign to subdue the Welsh and establish English control over the region.
The castle was designed with both military and administrative purposes in mind. Its strategic location offered panoramic views of the surrounding countryside, providing an advantageous position for defense. The fortress features a massive curtain wall with towers and a gatehouse, all constructed with sturdy stone materials.
The interior of Castell Dinbych includes several key features. The Great Hall, once the center of social and political activities, showcases stunning architectural details such as the ornate fireplace and large windows. The chapel, dedicated to St. Hilary, still retains some of its original medieval decorations.
Over the centuries, the castle saw numerous conflicts and changes of ownership. It played a significant role during the English Civil War, serving as a Royalist stronghold. However, after a siege in 1646, the castle was largely destroyed and left in ruins.
Today, Castell Dinbych is managed by Cadw, the Welsh government's historic environment service. Visitors can explore the castle's remains, including the towers and walls, and enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside. The site also offers an informative visitor center, providing insights into the castle's history and significance. Castell Dinbych stands as a powerful reminder of Wales' rich heritage and its turbulent past.

Statue of Sir Henry Morton Stanley who was born in Denbigh in 1841. His birth name was John Rowland, he was the illegitimate son of 18 year old Elizabeth Parry. His birth certificate describes him as a 'bastard'. He was abandoned by his mother and spent some time in St Asaph Workhouse and at the age of 18 he travelled to the USA where he was employed by a wealthy trader named Henry Hope Stanley, who effectively became his adoptive father, hence John Rowland adopted the name Henry Morton Stanley. He became a journalist employed by the New York Herald and in 1871 financed by the newspaper he went in search of Dr David Livingstone. Stanley is a controversial figure to some, because of his work for the Belgian King Leopold II, and the establishment of the Congo as a colony of the Belgian king.

Drinking fountain
In the centre of Denbigh, the fountain was presented for use of the public by Dr Pierce, Mayor of Denbigh.
Dr Evan Pierce (1808-1895) was born in a small village just outside Denbigh and attended Denbigh Grammar School. He trained as a doctor at Edinburgh University and qualified in 1832. On his return to Denbigh that year he was faced with a cholera epidemic that had claimed 300 lives in one month. He joined other local doctors in caring for the sick and after hard work the epidemic was finally brought under control.
