Skenfrith Castle is an impressive medieval fortress located in the picturesque county of Monmouthshire, Wales. Believed to have been built in the early 13th century, it stands as a testament to the region's rich history and architectural prowess. The castle is situated on the banks of the River Monnow, strategically positioned to guard the border with England.

The castle's design is typical of the period, featuring a square-shaped keep surrounded by a curtain wall with four corner towers. It was constructed using local sandstone, giving it a distinctive reddish color that adds to its charm. The main entrance is accessed through a robust gatehouse, which would have provided extra security during times of conflict.

Inside the castle, visitors can explore the remains of various buildings, including a great hall, kitchen, and living quarters. While much of the interior has been lost to time, the layout still provides valuable insights into the daily life of the castle's inhabitants. The views from the top of the keep are particularly impressive, offering panoramic vistas of the surrounding countryside.

Over the centuries, Skenfrith Castle has undergone several modifications and repairs. It played a role in numerous conflicts, including the Welsh Wars of Independence and the English Civil War. Despite suffering damage during these conflicts, the castle has managed to retain much of its original structure.

Today, Skenfrith Castle is a popular heritage site and a popular attraction for history enthusiasts and tourists alike. It is managed by Cadw, the historic environment service of the Welsh Government, and offers visitors the opportunity to step back in time and explore the fascinating world of medieval Wales.
