Denbigh Friary
Denbigh Friary, located in Denbighshire, Wales, is a historic site of great significance. This medieval friary, founded in 1284, was established by the Franciscan order of friars, also known as Grey Friars. The friary was built on the eastern outskirts of Denbigh, nestled in the picturesque Vale of Clwyd.
The friary complex boasted a church, cloister, dormitory, chapter house, and other essential buildings. The church, with its beautiful Gothic architecture, was the centerpiece of the friary. Its impressive nave, transepts, and chancel showcased the architectural prowess of the time. The cloister, an open courtyard surrounded by arcades, provided a serene space for meditation and contemplation.
Denbigh Friary played a significant role in the religious and social life of the local community. It served as a place of worship, a center for education, and a refuge for the needy. The friars were known for their dedication to the poor and their commitment to the principles of poverty, chastity, and obedience.
However, the friary's fortunes took a turn for the worse during the dissolution of the monasteries in the 16th century. In 1538, it was dissolved by Henry VIII, and its assets were seized by the crown. The friary fell into disrepair and was subsequently abandoned.
Today, Denbigh Friary stands as a ruin, but its architectural remnants continue to evoke a sense of awe and admiration. The site is open to the public, allowing visitors to explore the remains of this once-thriving religious institution. Statue of Sir Henry Morton Stanley who was born in Denbigh in 1841. His birth name was John Rowland, he was the illegitimate son of 18 year old Elizabeth Parry. His birth certificate describes him as a 'bastard'. He was abandoned by his mother and spent some time in St Asaph Workhouse and at the age of 18 he travelled to the USA where he was employed by a wealthy trader named Henry Hope Stanley, who effectively became his adoptive father, hence John Rowland adopted the name Henry Morton Stanley. He became a journalist employed by the New York Herald and in 1871 financed by the newspaper he went in search of Dr David Livingstone. Stanley is a controversial figure to some, because of his work for the Belgian King Leopold II, and the establishment of the Congo as a colony of the Belgian king.

Drinking fountain
In the centre of Denbigh, the fountain was presented for use of the public by Dr Pierce, Mayor of Denbigh.
Dr Evan Pierce (1808-1895) was born in a small village just outside Denbigh and attended Denbigh Grammar School. He trained as a doctor at Edinburgh University and qualified in 1832. On his return to Denbigh that year he was faced with a cholera epidemic that had claimed 300 lives in one month. He joined other local doctors in caring for the sick and after hard work the epidemic was finally brought under control.
