The south front was completed in 1764; by this time William Wentworth was in charge of the design, assisted by John Platt and Charles Ross. The house is set in an extensive landscaped estate (grade I listed) which includes a large folly, Stainborough Castle (built 1726-30). A grade II* listed Victorian conservatory is built on the northern side of the house.
Wentworth Castle is now owned by Barnsley Metropolitan Council and houses the Northern College for Residential and Community Education.

Old milestone Since this milestone was last photographed, the entrance into the Wentworth Castle estate on Rockley Lane leading to Queen Anne's Obelisk has been tarmacked.   Fortunately the legend on the milestone, 1/Mile, is still visible and the tarmac will keep the weeds at bay.  Wentworth Castle was built between 1711-1764 for Willian Wentworth, the Earl of Strafford.
