Middleton is a civil parish located in Lancashire, England. It is situated approximately 5 miles northwest of Manchester city center and is part of the Greater Manchester metropolitan area. The parish covers an area of around 7.7 square miles and is bordered by the towns of Heywood, Rochdale, and Blackley.

Middleton has a rich history dating back to the medieval period. It was originally an agricultural settlement, but with the advent of the Industrial Revolution, it became a center for textile manufacturing. The town's growth was fueled by the coal mines and cotton mills that sprung up in the area. Today, remnants of its industrial past can still be seen in the form of old mills and warehouses.

Pipeline on Middleton Sands I believe this pipeline is an outfall from the sewage works in <a href="https://www.geograph.org.uk/gridref/SD4158">SD4158</a>. The beacon shown on the 1:50000 map is just out of the picture to the right.

In Spring 1982, Heysham 1 power station was essentially complete. Heysham 2 (right foreground) was under construction.
In the harbour, there was only one RoRo ferry ramp. This has recently been replaced and 2 others have been built.
The gas field servicing offices had yet to be built on the north quay.
The area in the right background (where the oil tanks can be seen) is now an industrial estate.
The level area in front of this, which used to be covered in railway sidings, is now used for lorry/trailer parking.

Southern outfall, Heysham Power Station A huge amount of seawater is discharged after condensing the steam in the turbines. Standing above the otflow it is possible to feel the heat and gulls wheel about, presumably attracted by fish in the warm water.
