Bursledon

Bursledon is a civil parish located in Hampshire, England. It is situated on the eastern bank of the River Hamble and is part of the borough of Eastleigh. The parish covers an area of approximately 3 square miles and has a population of around 9,000 people.

Bursledon is known for its rich history, with evidence of human settlement dating back to the Mesolithic era. The area was once a thriving center for shipbuilding and maritime trade, with several shipyards operating along the river during the 18th and 19th centuries. Today, the village still retains its maritime heritage, with a number of historic buildings and landmarks, including the 18th-century Bursledon Windmill, which is open to the public.

Towards the River Hamble

Seen a couple of hours after one of the highest tides in 2012, this inlet is still very full of water. I was standing on a footbridge over a small stream, and suspect that the bridge boards would have been under water at high tide!

Bursledon Brickworks Museum

The brickworks was founded in 1897 and closed in 1974. The site has been recognised nationally as one of high significance and it is almost definitely the only steam driven brickworks left intact in the country - possibly in Europe. The site became an industrial museum in 2007. At its height, in the late 1930s, the works was producing 20 million bricks a year. In this image, the large shed houses the kilns. The chimney was used to draw air through the kilns, which were connected to the chimney by underground shafts.

Bursledon Brickworks

The brickworks closed in 1974, and became an industrial museum in 2007. The Victorian buildings are grade 2 listed, and were never updated during the working life of the brickworks, so parts of the ten-acre site are in a poor state of repair. The miniature railway seen here is a modern addition owned by the Hampshire Narrow Gauge Railway Trust, and is used to give rides to visitors on steam-powered trains.

The brickworks closed in 1974 and became an industrial museum in 2007. This indoor view is of one of the drying rooms. Unfired, freshly made bricks were laid out on the wooden slats and underfloor heating was used to dry the clay before the bricks were transferred to the kilns for firing.

Disused bridge, Bursledon Brickworks

This bridge spans the M27 motorway. The bridge was built under an aerial ropeway which was used to transport clay from the nearby clay pits to the brickworks - the bridge being there to protect traffic below from anything dropping from the ropeway. The brickworks closed in 1974, before the then newly built motorway was opened to traffic, so the bridge was never actually needed. Bursledon Brickworks is now an industrial museum.
