Fuel Prices 2022 Having fallen to just over £1 per litre at the start of the Covid Pandemic, the cost of petrol and diesel has soared during the last few weeks. Many reasons have been put forward to explain the rise (including allegations of "profiteering"); a report on the BBC News website <span class="nowrap"><a title="https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-52188448" rel="nofollow ugc noopener" href="https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-52188448">Link</a><img style="margin-left:2px;" alt="External link" title="External link - shift click to open in new window" src="https://s1.geograph.org.uk/img/external.png" width="10" height="10"/></span> put forward the following argument:

"Fuel prices have increased sharply because the price for crude oil, which is used to make petrol and diesel, has gone up. Crude oil was cheaper at the beginning of the Covid pandemic because many businesses temporarily closed and demand for energy collapsed. As life returned to normal, the demand for energy increased. But suppliers have struggled to keep up and prices have risen.
Another problem is that the oil used to make petrol is paid for in US dollars. The pound is weak against the dollar at the moment, which makes fuel even more expensive".

I had seen diesel costing more than £2 per litre during the previous week but this was the first time I had seen the cost of both diesel and regular unleaded petrol above the psychological £2 per litre mark.
