A nesting Chilean flamingo (Phoenicopterus chilensis)

Curiously we watched this flamingo use its beak rather like a JCB to drag what appeared to be wood chippings under its body. Normally male flamingos assist in building the nest but we presume this is the female sitting on an egg as it was smaller than its counterpart close by. The quality of the Dahlias at the Welsh Mountain Zoo are always superb. No blackfly, no leaves nibbled, guess it must be the animal poo they use to manure and fertilise the soil. Variety unknown.

Elsa and Genghis - Bactrian camels

A new female Bactrian camel, Elsa, a friend and mate for longstanding male resident, Genghis. Elsa has made the move from Blackpool Zoo. Genghis is the furthest one. With less than 1000 wild Bactrian camels, conservation of this species, native to the Gobi Desert in Mongolia and in the Gashun Gobi in China, is critical.
