St. Cuthbert's Church, Carlisle

The church dates from 1778, and is probably the fourth one on the site. It is aligned northeast/southwest (rather than the usual east/west), which is indicative of a very early foundation, possibly before St. Cuthbert visited Carlisle in 685. Inside is a large moving pulpit, which enables the whole congregation to see the vicar, from downstairs and in the gallery. Information is available on the church website : Link

Caldew Railway Bridge - last chance to see

The bridge has stood like this since 1984, when half of it was demolished by a train crash. The incident occurred when some wagons became detached from a train and were freewheeling towards Carlisle Station. A quick-thinking signalman managed to divert them onto this line, which was opened in 1877 specifically for goods traffic, to avoid it going through the Station.
