A total of seven kilns (or more accurately, their outer shells or 'hovels') remain on this site, five of them at the Gladstone site and two at the adjacent Roslyn works. Five are seen in this view.

Nearest the camera was the Roslyn Works, and beyond that the Gladstone Pottery (now a museum). They are jointly listed grade II* (list entry 1195854).

The pottery was founded later than the adjacent Gladstone Pottery (now a museum) and its two remaining kilns date from c.1940. It forms part of the same grade II* listed site as the Gladstone works.

This part of Longton is somewhat run-down. This former kitchen and bathroom showroom has shut.

Specialist immigration lawyers occupying a building that probably formed part of one of the many potteries in the area, an industry that had almost completely vanished by 1980. It is not listed, and none of the old maps online name it.

The various kilns and workshops are arranged around this central courtyard. The building in this photo is the north range of c.1860, including the 'tunnel' linking the courtyard to Uttoxeter Road.

One of five surviving 'bottle' kilns at the Gladstone works. The actual kiln is within the outer sheath or 'hovel' that aided updraught and protected workers from the weather.

One of five surviving 'bottle' kilns at the Gladstone works seen from the car park. There is a lightning conductor down this side of it, as any lightning strike on an unprotected brick structure like this would shatter the brickwork.

I'm not entirely sure which of the kilns this is, but they are all of similar construction: an outer sheath or 'hovel' protects the inner brick kiln, which is reinforced with iron hoops. An opening at the top of the roughly conical hovel allows the steam and smoke of the fire to escape (resulting in many pollution-related diseases and deaths in the local population).

The figure of a man carrying a 'saggar', which would hold several pottery items for firing within the kiln. Hundreds of saggars would be stacked in each kiln and fired for several days at up to 1200C.
