A good post office counter service has for some time been available up Spinney Hill in the McColl convenience store, now a Morrisons Daily branch. There are main post offices in the town centres of Warwick and Leamington.

Dying Redwoods, Warwick

There are many Giant Redwoods (Sequoiadendron giganteum) planted by the Nelson manufacturing family in their grounds at Emscote Lawn. The group left of centre in the photograph has been showing signs of ill health in recent years. The reason is almost certainly because during the Campriano Drive development rubbish and soil were piled up over their roots, compressing them and excluding air SP2965 : Redwoods on rubbish, Warwick. Trees elsewhere on the estate are thriving. It was reported recently that there are now more Giant Redwoods in Britain than in their native California. It is pleasing that Warwick is home to some of them. Photo number 7774488.

Footpaths by Rock Mill Lane, Milverton

The paths are seen looking north from the Portobello Bridge that takes Emscote Road over the River Avon, which runs among the trees on the left hand side of the picture. In the distance, to the right, can be seen the new bridge that carries Sir Anthony Eden Way over the river and, behind it, the 18th century Rock Mill building, now converted to housing.

Canal overflow channel, Emscote, Warwick

The Grand Union Canal between Warwick and Offchurch is a 'sink', ie, at a low level with water flowing into it from locks at each end. To avoid flooding there are several overflow weirs along the 7 km stretch. In the photo the canal is at high level left between bridge 46 and the Avon Aqueduct SP2965 : Towpath and overflow weir, Grand Union Canal, Emscote Road. Water drops in a pipe or chute and is channelled to the River Avon behind the camera. The view is from this footbridge SP3065 : Small footbridge next to the River Avon.

The cloudy water is overflow from the Grand Union Canal. It leaves the canal by a weir SP2965 : Towpath and overflow weir, Grand Union Canal, Emscote Road and finds its way to the river by a channel more or less SP3065 : Canal overflow channel, Emscote, Warwick. The viewpoint is the Avon Aqueduct, completed in 1800 SP3065 : Aqueduct Over The Avon.

Mid-September seems early in the year to be seeing this. One associates bees-on-ivy with early winter. Perhaps ivy has a long flowering season. Note the adult form of the leaves.

Temporary occupation of Potterton's Field, Royal Leamington Spa

The open space was laid out in recent years SP3065 : New park on Potterton’s sports field. Warwick District Council has made it available to Network Rail as a temporary site for the assembly of a new railway bridge, planned to replace that over the Rugby Road at Easter 2022 SP3065 : Railway bridge, Rugby Road, Royal Leamington Spa. The open space will be restored.

Network Rail and its contractors are using this temporary site to construct a replacement for this bridge SP3065 : Railway bridge, Rugby Road, Royal Leamington Spa over the Rugby Road. The new bridge will be transported to the Rugby Road site and installed over the Easter 2022 weekend.

Replacement railway bridge for Rugby Road, Leamington

Over the Easter 2022 period the existing (probably 1850-ish) bridge will be removed and the new bridge transported, elevated and lowered into position. In the background is the road bridge over the Avon that carries Sir Anthony Eden Way between Rock Mill Lane, off to the right, and the Waterfront development ahead and left.

Rugby Road closures over Easter, Leamington

Closures will be in force while a railway bridge is being replaced. Although the near, eastbound, lane is closed, access to Quarry Street and Old Milverton Road is possible with care. Beyond Old Milverton Road, Rugby Road is closed in both directions on each side of the bridge SP3065 : Railway bridge, Rugby Road, Royal Leamington Spa. The green item is a temporary street light. The width of the bridge on its transporter is such that everything in its path has to be removed – such as the lighting column. Solar panels must charge a battery that powers the light (telescopic, collapsed here).

Graded stone is being laid to extend the construction site. Space will be needed to manoeuvre the old bridge deck on to a temporary support as well as for the transportation of the new bridge to the Rugby Road site.
