Newark Priory, located in the county of Surrey, England, is a historic heritage site that dates back to the 12th century. Situated on the banks of the River Wey, the priory is renowned for its picturesque setting and architectural significance.

Originally founded as a house for Augustinian canons around 1140, Newark Priory grew in importance over the centuries. The priory was known for its religious influence and extensive landholdings, which made it a significant local power in medieval times. However, like many other religious institutions, Newark Priory faced dissolution during the 16th-century English Reformation. In 1538, it was suppressed and subsequently fell into ruin.

Today, the remains of Newark Priory consist of the chapter house, cloister, and parts of the church. These ruins, which have been designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument, provide a glimpse into the architectural grandeur of the past. The chapter house, with its intricate stone carvings and Gothic arches, is particularly notable.

The priory is set within a tranquil meadow, surrounded by lush greenery and offering stunning views of the river. It has become a popular destination for visitors seeking a peaceful retreat or a glimpse into Surrey's rich history. The site is managed by English Heritage, ensuring its preservation and accessibility to the public.

In summary, Newark Priory in Surrey is a historic heritage site that was once a thriving religious institution. Today, its ruins stand as a testament to its former grandeur, attracting visitors with its architectural beauty and serene surroundings.
