Metheringham railway station, Lincolnshire

Opened as "Blankney and Metheringham" in 1882 by the Great Northern Railway and Great Eastern Railway on their joint line from Lincoln to Sleaford, this station closed in 1961 and was demolished. It was rebuilt and reopened as "Metheringham" in 1975, with minimal facilities. View south east from the level crossing. The former signal box, just visible to the right of the line by the level crossing, still had a "Blankney" sign on it, when this image was taken.

Memorial to all those killed in a tragic mid air collision

463 (RAAF) Sqn Lancaster LM130 JN-N "Nick the Nazi Neutralizer" had departed Waddington for a Fighter Affiliation Exercise 1690 BDTF (Bomber Defence Training Flight) Hurricane PZ740 had departed Metheringham - as part of the same Exercise. Whilst participating in evasive manoeuvres the two aircraft collided close to the village of Blankney at 2100 on the 11th March 1945. The image was taken on the 75th Anniversary of the accident. RAAF 419136 PO Orchard, N H Captain (Pilot) RAF Sgt D A Charles, (Navigator) RAF Sgt H Rollins (Bomb Aimer) RAF Sgt W F H Elcome, (Wireless Operator Air Gunner) RAF Flt Sgt R F Neale, (Flight Engineer) RAF Sgt B J Patch, (Air Gunner) RAF Sgt H Shaw, (Air Gunner) PO Orchard, Flt Sgt Neale, Sgt Elcome, Sgt Patch, and the Hurricane pilot PO Parlato are buried in the RAF plot within the City Cemetery, Cambridge, UK. Link Sgt Charles is buried in the Llanelli Church Cemetery, Carmarthenshire, UK Sgt Rollins is buried in the Leigh Cemetery, Lancashire, UK. Sgt Shaw is buried in the Heckmondwike Cemetery, Yorkshire, UK.
