Duns Castle dates back to the 14th Century, but was extensively remodelled on neo-Gothic lines in the 19th Century. Hen Poo in the foreground is one of two artificial ponds in the grounds of the Castle. With accompanying mallards in the foreground.

The inscription reads: 1800-2000 to commemorate the bicentenary of Duns Curling Club who curled on the Hen Poo It is hard to imagine that the Hen Poo was often frozen to sufficient depth to allow curling to take place.
