For sand, read wonderful mud The map says the surface is sand, but the truth is clearly different. After a long hard slog to get to 'the sands' it was an even harder slog to walk across the area. But what peace and what beauty!

Silver mud Facing landwards, this view from the mudflats is typical of the area beyond the samphire beds. As you approach the shoreline, tiny individual clumps of samphire appear randomly before they begin to knit together.

Towards Herring Hill View from the corner of the gridsquare towards Herring Hill. I daren't go much further as I was exhausted by the sticky sucking mud. It was supposed to be sand!

Out in the wilderness Not much in the way of vegetation or wildlife out here apart from a few cockles, but what a glorious sight!

Where mud meets marsh Small clumps of samphire begin to mass together as you approach the coastline from the mudflats. The high tide was only some 5 hours earlier yet the mud has taken on a drought-like appearance.

There and back again Who needs satellite navigation when there's lots of sticky, sucking mud to guide your way back!

Bit of a squeeze Looking as if the two drains either side were going to meet, but not this time. The vegetation has changed to sharp grass en route to the 'beach' instead of the softer material interspersed with samphire.

Almost on Puff sands After a gruelling walk over the salt marsh to get here, I had to turn back just before reaching the relatively easy-going sand beyond as I had developed a pain in my right foot. I didn't fancy having to hop all the way back!

A lesson in socially distancing on the beach No need for any masks out here and no need to figure out the difference between two metres and two inches. Loads of room for everybody!

Best thing is not a beer can, plastic bag, disposable nappy or McDonald's cup in sight!

But then, didn't I just hear that seagull cough?
