Berrow Flats

Berrow Flats is a coastal marsh and saltings area located in Somerset, England. Situated along the Bristol Channel, it covers an approximate area of 500 hectares. The flats are part of the larger Berrow and Brean Complex, which includes Berrow Dunes and Brean Down.

The landscape of Berrow Flats is characterized by a mixture of salt marshes, sand dunes, and mudflats. It is an important coastal habitat for a wide variety of plant and animal species. The marshes are home to salt-tolerant plants such as sea lavender, sea aster, and samphire, which thrive in the brackish water conditions.

The area is a haven for birdlife, particularly during the winter months when it becomes an important feeding ground for migratory birds. Species such as dunlins, curlews, redshanks, and avocets can be spotted here. Additionally, the marshes provide nesting sites for several species of gulls and terns.

Berrow Flats is also recognized for its geological importance. The salt marshes are formed by the deposition of salt and silt carried by the tides. The constant interaction between the sea and the land has resulted in the formation of intricate channels and creeks throughout the flats.

Due to its ecological significance, Berrow Flats is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and a Special Protection Area (SPA).
