St Mary, Hayling: an admiral's grave

Sir James Startin, KCB: during his career from Midshipman in 1869 to retirement as Vice Admiral in 1914 he performed numerous heroic feats, often plunging into freezing seas to rescue men overboard. His finest time, however, came when he was recalled during the Great War, promoted to full admiral and awarded the Albert Medal for rescuing a man from a blazing motor launch. Departing more recently were: 5th December 2022, the Cheers actress Kirstie Alley; 6th December, Stranglers drummer Jet Black; 7th, the last Dambuster Johnny Johnson; 9th, Mrs Thatcher’s fixer Lord Young of Graffham and Hi di Hi’s Ruth Madoc; 10th, the sardonic journalist Victor Lewis-Smith; 19th, Specials singer Terry Hall and Ali Ahmed Aslam, the chef who invented Chicken Tikka Masala; 23rd, George Cohen, 1966 World Cup winner; 24th, impressionist John Bird; 29th, Punk’s Vivienne Westwood and the GOATs’ GOAT Pelé; 31st, singer Anita Pointer and Pope Emiterus Benedict XVI Other months saw us say farewell to Meat Loaf (January); Bamber Gascoigne (February); Shane Warne (March), June Brown (April), Lester Piggott (May), Dame Deborah James (June), Shinzo Abe (July), Mikhail Gorbachev (August), The Queen (September), Loretta Lynn (October), and Doddie Weir (November).

The font in a Christian church is that place where new members are inducted in a ceremony known as a christening. Fonts are often symbolically placed at or near the entrance. Typically, the font is between 90 and 130 centimetres tall and sculpted in stone- although wood and metal are sometimes used. During the ceremony, a priest traces the sign of the cross on the new member’s forehead. If an infant, several adults will be asked to be godparents. A pulpit is a raised stand for preachers in a Christian church. It comes from the Latin 'pulpitum' meaning platform or staging. It is raised well above the surrounding floor for audibility and visibility, accessed by steps, with sides coming to about waist height. Many have a canopy known as the 'abat-voix', a sounding board to project the preacher's voice to congregation.

Pill box, Selsmore, Hayling Island, Hampshire

The pill box is a wartime defensive relic dating from the early 1940s when there was a real risk of invasion by the German war machine under the leadership of Adolf Hitler. Fortunately Hitler was distracted by an option to invade Russia and the planned invasion of Britain was deferred, in the event permanently. The pill box seems to be in remarkably good condition although it has started to sink into the landscape.
