Tree tunnel on path between Kentsford Farm & Washford The coastal path between Watchet and Blue Anchor is currently closed (October 2021) but this attractive alternative route takes you inland and goes via this 'tree tunnel' for about a mile between Kentsford Farm and Washford. This was once the route of the West Somerset Mineral Railway which carried iron ore from mines in the Brendon Hills to the coast at Watchet.

East Quay arts hub in Watchet The East Quay arts complex opened in 2021 on the eastern side of Watchet marina. It was commissioned and is run by Onion Collective - a local female-led, not for profit social enterprise organisation and provides a new cultural centre for the town and the surrounding areas. It comprises 2 galleries, 11 artist studios, a paper making enterprise, a print studio, a geology workshop, cafe/restaurant, shop and 5 accommodation pods arranged across the top of building.

It has been a contentious project with some people liking the contemporary design, and others having a contrary view. Whatever the opinion, it is hoped that the development will bring employment and prosperity to the town, which saw it's major employer, a paper mill, close for good in 2015, with the loss of over 100 jobs.

Memorial to Derek the goose A much-loved goose called Derek used to reside in the harbourisde town of Watchet in Somerset.

Derek had apparently been blown in on a storm in 2010, along with many other geese. The others moved on but Derek remained behind. Derek was initially thought to be a male snow goose - it was not until she laid eggs that she was identified as a female bird - but by then the name had stuck.

Sadly, Derek disappeared in October 2021, leaving behind only a trail of feathers.

A memorial to the beloved bird was unveiled in October 2022, at the top of the slipway. It was created by local artist Chris Phillingham and was funded by donations via a funding page.

Sea Mine collection box in Watchet harbour A sea mine from the Second World War is now a collection box. The Shipwrecked Mariners' Society provides financial support and practical assistance to merchant seafarers, fisherfolk and their dependants.

The sea mines were used to defend the British coast and harbours during the war. After the war, approximately 200 mine casings were donated to the society by the Admiralty for use as collection boxes. 60 of these currently survive at coastal towns around the country.

The text on the blue notice above the mine says 'This old Second World War Mine is placed here as a collecting box. Your donation will help us support the dependants of those lost at sea as well as sick, disabled and retired fishermen and mariners in need'.

The text on the white slotted plate through which you deposit your donation says 'The Shipwrecked Fishermen & Mariners Royal Benevolent Society - founded 1839 - for the alleviation of every phase of shipwreck distress'.
