Balta

Balta is a small, uninhabited island located in the Shetland archipelago, off the northern coast of Scotland. With an area of about 2.5 square kilometers, it is one of the smaller islands in the group. Balta is situated approximately 3 kilometers northeast of the Isle of Unst, the northernmost inhabited island in the British Isles.

It is largely composed of gneiss, a type of metamorphic rock, and is home to a variety of seabirds, including puffins, guillemots, and razorbills. Archaeological excavations have revealed evidence of early Norse settlements on the island, including the remains of a longhouse and a boat-shaped burial mound. These findings suggest that Balta was once a thriving community, relying on fishing and farming for sustenance.

Today, Balta is primarily visited by tourists and wildlife enthusiasts who are drawn to its natural beauty and abundant birdlife.
