Carneddau is a range of mountains located in Caernarfonshire, Wales. It is part of the wider Snowdonia National Park and covers an area of approximately 200 square kilometers. The range is known for its rugged and wild landscape, with a series of peaks and ridges that offer breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside.

The highest peak in the Carneddau range is Carnedd Llewelyn, standing at an impressive 1,064 meters (3,491 feet) above sea level. Other notable peaks include Carnedd Dafydd, Pen yr Ole Wen, and Foel Grach. These mountains are popular among hikers and climbers, attracting both experienced mountaineers and casual walkers.

The Carneddau range is characterized by its diverse flora and fauna. The lower slopes are covered in heather, grasses, and mosses, while the higher areas are home to hardy alpine plants such as dwarf willow and saxifrage. The range also supports a variety of wildlife, including mountain goats, wild ponies, and red grouse.

Historically, the Carneddau range has been used for grazing livestock, and remnants of old sheepfolds and shepherd huts can still be found scattered across the hillsides. The area is also rich in archaeological sites, with ancient burial cairns, stone circles, and standing stones dating back thousands of years.

Carneddau is a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts seeking solitude and a sense of adventure. Its untamed beauty and challenging terrain make it a favorite among nature lovers, hikers, and photographers alike. Whether exploring the high peaks or wandering through the valleys, a visit to Carneddau promises an unforgettable experience in the heart of the Welsh countryside.

Dulyn valley Looking across the valley of the Afon Dulyn towards the lavish corlannau (multi-chambered sheepfolds) of Garreg-wen. As usual, their location is determined by an abundant source of building stone, in this case huge quantities of glacial boulders strewn from nearby rock outcrop. The panoramic view of this epic glacial valley are most rewarding and more satisfying than the sodden slog across it! Ffrwd Cerriguniaun Looking over Pant y Griafolen to Ffrwd Cerriguniaun. Low, winter light is so good at picking out the elements of landscape, in this case the incised valleys of small rivers descending to join Afon Dulyn. The valleys are cut into thick glacial deposits and thus easily eroded, while the treeless slopes are strewn with glacial erratic boulders which also show-up well in the oblique illumination. The name of the river seems to translate as the torrent of the upright rocks, but further investigation is indicated to find what they are.
