The garden originally would have been an entirely practical space, growing fruit, vegetables and flowers for the adjacent Duncombe Park. This area retains that part of the garden's heritage.

Path into Monk Holme Wood This view has changed since I was last here in 2015. Gone are many of the conifers that once overhung the path, and gone also is the 'assault course' over felled tree trunks. However this still isn't a pleasant route in winter as the path has plenty of sticky mud. The alternative footpath that diverts around Reagarth Farm to the woodland edge of Riccal Dale is preferable.

December gloom in Riccal Dale One of several tracks and paths that drop down into the dale from the edge of the hill. Despite the gloom of a December day, the views from the dale edge path have improved recently thanks to some timber clearance. Riccal Dale is one of the most attractive and quietest of the dales that cut through the Tabular Hills.

Borogate, Helmsley Borogate leads south-east from the Market Square with the Helmsley Bookshop on the corner. Officially the Boxing Day bank holiday, plenty of people were taking the opportunity to wander the streets in a leisurely fashion and maybe take in a bit of shopping.

Path in Ash Dale I was tempted into following this path which is marked on the OS map. It isn't a right of way, although it does link two public footpaths. Easy enough to follow, but in places the surface is badly drained and churned up, whilst the amount of brambles to fight through increases as one heads south. Not recommended.
