Butts Hill is a small hill located in the county of Essex, in the eastern part of England. Despite its name, it is not a hill in the traditional sense, but rather a mound or small elevated area of land. Standing at approximately 50 meters above sea level, it offers a modest elevation and scenic views of the surrounding countryside.

The hill is situated near the village of Buttsbury, which is believed to have been named after the hill. It is primarily composed of chalk and clay, typical of the geological makeup of the region. The area surrounding Butts Hill is predominantly agricultural, with fields and meadows stretching out in all directions.

The hill itself is covered in grass and a few scattered trees, which provide some shade and shelter for local wildlife. It is a popular spot for local residents and visitors to take walks or enjoy a picnic, particularly during the summer months when the weather is favorable.

From the top of Butts Hill, visitors can take in panoramic views of the surrounding countryside, with its patchwork of fields, hedgerows, and quaint villages. On a clear day, one can even catch a glimpse of the nearby River Crouch, which meanders its way through the Essex countryside.

Overall, Butts Hill offers a peaceful and picturesque location for those seeking a brief respite from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, with its gentle slopes and scenic vistas making it a charming destination for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts alike.

Rosewood Bunker This is the guardhouse to RAF Canewdon in Gardener’s Lane it is now a private property called “Rosewood”. The site was part of the chain home radar system from WW2 that was used for many years after. However this site closed not long after the end of the war. The aerial masts were sited to the north. One of the masts was bought by Marconi and still exists. See TL7203
A second mast was also reused somewhere on the Welsh coast although in cut down form. There are some that think the site was used into the Cold War.

Footpath through Ballards Gore Golf Club Footpath through golf course north towards Canewdon. When I was a lad, this area was an abandoned gravel working with spoil tips, old machinery, rough scrub and flooded pits with tench the size of nuclear submarines. It's gone sadly downhill over the last 40 years.

Stile west of Loftmans Farm The footpath runs south from here to West Hall. But it's been over-sown with wheat and wheat's about all there is in this square. The blue thing on top of the stile is a length of plastic water pipe in which the electric fence wire runs, a gesture by a considerate farmer to prevent electrocution of ramblers. Shame about the over-sowing though.

Gardiners Lane Pillbox in Canewdon features a rare mount for what I believe was a Vickers pompom AA gun. See the other shot for more information and another view. There are many pillboxes around here, built to guard the former radar site on the same road.

Unfortunately someone has put a tyre over the AA turret. A friend of mine tried to pull it off, but it is stuck fast. This pillbox is very rare.
