Gallow Hill gets its name from its historical significance as a site for public executions. In the past, criminals were hanged here, and their bodies were left on display as a deterrent to others. The hill served as a symbol of justice and punishment in the Shetland community.

Today, Gallow Hill is a popular attraction for locals and tourists alike. It is easily accessible, with a well-maintained path leading to the summit. The hill provides an excellent vantage point to observe the picturesque town of Lerwick, the harbor, and the surrounding islands. On a clear day, visitors can even catch a glimpse of the North Sea.

The area around Gallow Hill is rich in wildlife, and visitors may encounter a variety of bird species, including puffins and gannets. The hill is also home to a diverse range of plant life, with heather and wildflowers adding color to the landscape.

We are on the Wick of Belmont and this is Belmont House, a category A-listed Georgian country house which was built in 1775 by Shetland landowner Thomas Mouat of Garth. Restored to its former glory between 1996 and 2010, it is now a private residence though it has been let out occasionally as a venue for cultural events and B&B accommodation.
