The 'Tempest Arms', Elslack, Yorkshire Many years ago, 'Mine Host' at the Tempest was the former Middlesex and England cricketer Peter Parfitt, who went on to supervise hospitality at the Headingley ground of the Leeds Football and Cricket Club - better known as a Test Match ground and home of Yorkshire Cricket Club. Parfitt was succeeded as incumbent at the Tempest by the redoubtable Frenchman, Francis Pierre Boulogne, who presided for many years and established an excellent culinary reputation for the pub, which still continues, and in addition, accommodation is now available.
As footnote to the serious beer drinker, Timothy Taylor's 'Landlord', (which, I am reliably informed, is Madonna's favourite beer!) is on draught here.

The Tempest Arms, Elslack Proud of its reputation as the Pub of the Year 2011 according to the Good Pub Guide. This must stem from the food which dominates the activity here, but the bar area still managed to retain a bit of pub atmosphere. The beer range was good but not outstanding.

Lock-keeper's house on the Bank Newton flight This very attractive house is situated next to the pound between the fourth and fifth locks of six on the Bank Newton flight when heading east (downhill). The lock, one gate-beam of which can be seen in the foreground is the fifth lock of the flight, numbered 37 and has a rise of 9'4" (Note that the flight is numbered 1 (Top) to 6 (Bottom) which is eastwards (downhill), but the lock numbers increment westwards, so the next lock ahead (lock 4 of the flight) is numbered 38 .. a little confusing, I know !)
