89 George Street, Edinburgh This very impressive building (one of many along what is probably Edinburgh&#039;s most upmarket major street) is famous for having been the premises of Grays (or, more formally, James Gray and Son) ironmongers for over a century. An old sign can still be seen on the left (West) side of the building.
Judging by old adverts and newspaper snippets the firm specialised in selling handmade metal goods to the rich, the very rich, and most of Scotland&#039;s unimaginably rich titled landowners.
At the opening ceremony in 1903 (which started with a prayer incidentally) the boss at the time boasted that the business had just been appointed as “Purveyor of Lamps and Oils to His Majesty the King.” This title had basically been inherited from another similar company, Smiths - whose distant beginnings centred on designing lighthouse reflective dishes - that Grays had bought out a few years before. After the takeover, Grays, who at the time had premises two doors to the right, purchased No. 89, which was where Smiths were based, demolished it and built this in its place.

Not any old architect, but Sir Norman Foster. Some of Edinburgh's old bus shelters, previously maintained and managed by Clear Channel for many years, are being replaced. New contractors JCDecaux, appointed as the city’s ‘media partner’ last year, have installed 9 hi-tech shelters, with 2.1m interactive screens, on Princes Street. They are supposed to have touch-screen technology to provide advertising and real-time information about local services, although it was not evident on this shelter; they are also to have telephone charging points. The digital bus shelter network will provide editorial recommendations on the best things to do in the city. Around the city 350 advertising bus shelters are also being upgraded.

Advertising the Edinburgh Art Festival's exhibition of David Bailey's photography at the Scottish National Gallery. It continues until 18 October 2015. The presence/absence of the apostrophe seems to be optional - it is present in the show's title, but not in the gallery's 'what's on' poster, or here. Possibly it would cause artistic offence to slip one on the pillar between 'Y' and 'S'? How handy there were eight pillars and so seven spaces - good thing it wasn't Modigliani!
