Berner's Heath, located in Suffolk, England, is a picturesque and diverse landscape encompassing downs and moorland. Spanning an area of approximately 200 acres, this natural haven offers a rich tapestry of flora and fauna, making it a popular destination for nature enthusiasts and hikers alike.

The downs of Berner's Heath are characterized by gently rolling hills covered in vibrant green grasses and wildflowers. These open grasslands provide a habitat for a variety of bird species such as skylarks, meadow pipits, and kestrels. The downs are also home to several rare plant species, including orchids and cowslips, which add bursts of color to the landscape during the summer months.

Moving towards the moorland area, visitors are greeted by a more rugged and wild terrain. Here, heather dominates the landscape, painting the hills in vibrant purples and pinks during the late summer and early autumn. Moorland birds, such as stonechats and curlews, can often be spotted darting between the heather bushes.

The diverse habitats found in Berner's Heath make it an important conservation area, with efforts in place to protect its unique natural features. The heath is also a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), recognizing its ecological value and the need for its preservation.

With its stunning vistas, abundant wildlife, and serene atmosphere, Berner's Heath offers visitors a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, providing a chance to reconnect with nature and marvel at the beauty of the Suffolk countryside.

Elveden War Memorial Driving along the A11 as I approached this column I had to stop and have a closer look. My first though was it was a monument on an estate in memory of an eminent local landowner, but no it is a war memorial erected in 1921. Surely it will be difficult to find another as impressive as this. The monument was designed by Clyde Francis Young, and is Grade II* listed, see: <span class="nowrap"><a title="https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1037610?section=official-list-entry" rel="nofollow ugc noopener" href="https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1037610?section=official-list-entry">Link</a><img style="margin-left:2px;" alt="External link" title="External link - shift click to open in new window" src="https://s1.geograph.org.uk/img/external.png" width="10" height="10"/></span>

A11 north-west of Barton Mills Elveden War Memorial can be found sitting alongside the main A11 road between Thetford and Newmarket in a forest heath setting with limited car parking space available. At a massive 30 metres tall, it is Suffolk’s biggest war memorial and marks the point where Elveden, Eriswell & Icklingham all meet. It stands as a memorial to those killed from these three parishes in the Great War
