Butterley Reservoir Butterley Reservoir, seen here from Derby Road, was built in the 1790s to provide a water supply for the now disused Cromford Canal. It covers 12.1 hectares and contains about 283 million litres of water; it was created by damming the Hartshay Brook and is bisected by a causeway that carries the former Midland Railway's Ambergate to Pye Hill line (now a heritage railway). The reservoir is managed by the Canal & River Trust.

Midland Railway Butterley The Midland Railway Butterley is one of the smaller heritage railway operations in Great Britain. This view looking east from the B6179 bridge shows the ends of the platforms at Butterley station and the former Midland Railway signalbox which was brought here from Ais Gill in Cumbria. Between the two is a British Rail 'heritage' diesel multiple unit (DMU). The DMU, with its large windows and forward views through the driver's cab, is ideal for giving visitors trips on the line but is hardly an authentic experience - passenger services were withdrawn at Butterley in 1947, the year before railway nationalisation. The line itself was opened in 1875 and continued in use for freight until 1968; heritage services started running in 1981.

Butterley Station Although passenger trains ceased to serve Butterley in 1947, the station has since been revived as home to the Midland Railway Butterley heritage railway. The original buildings were demolished but this fine example of a Midland Railway small station building came here from Whitworth near Worksop. On this September weekday all was firmly shut up - the site is only open to the public at weekends.

Butterley Works The 'All drivers must report to goods inwards' sign is a poignant reminder that not so long ago this was an important industrial site, home to the famous Butterley Company that supplied ironwork for many of the UK's iconic buildings including St Pancras station. As the Butterley Engineering Co among its last prestige projects were the Falkirk Wheel in Scotland and the Spinnaker Tower in Portsmouth. In the 1950s the company had employed about 10,000 people but by 2009 it could no longer withstand the economic headwinds and was placed into administration. Most of the buildings here were demolished later the same year and the site still awaits a viable use.

Former Co-operative Hall, Ripley It would be hard to over-state the importance of the Co-operative movement in the industrial areas of Britain in the century between about 1870 and 1970. Today the name is mainly associated with a chain of convenience stores and funeral parlours but at one time the Co-op provided a vast range of services to working people. The Ripley Co-operative Society was one of many such organisations around the country; it started as the Butterley Co-operative Society in 1860, changing its name in 1864 as it began to expand. By 1879 it was able to have this hall built with shops below; it reportedly opened on 1st January 1880 with 800 people attending to take tea. The modern Co-op does not run halls and is no longer involved here but the name survives proudly displayed on the front of the building.
