Lonesome pine, Winster Valley Scots pine to be exact. Scots pines are not that common here and this one sits on open ground so is quite prominent. A good place to stand and watch the sky change colour as the sun sets behind Gummer's How.

On Rulbutts Hill Rulbutts Hill is an area of bracken, small rock outcrops and scrub. Although rougher than Scout Hill just to the north it is not CRoW access land. There is however a permissive path which runs from the end of the public footpath there, southwards to the footpath leading to Rosthwaite Farm. There are excellent views from the summit, here towards the snow-streaked central fells.

Injured calf in beck As I descended the bridleway I came across this sorry calf lying in the stream. At first I thought it was dead but it moved as I approached. I tried to lift it out of the water but it was too heavy and I was afraid of causing it further injury. A rather rank smell suggested that it had been lying there for some time. I called for help at a nearby house and the local farmer was alerted. Hopefully, the calf survived - much longer in the beck and it probably would have died from hypothermia.
