Little Gull (Hydrocoloeus minutus), Baltasound This delicate gull breeds in Eastern Europe, and is largely a passage migrant in Britain, including Shetland, although some birds presumably winter just offshore as they can be blown inshore by gales. This bird is an adult in breeding plumage, prospecting a small marsh which resembles its usual breeding habitat.

The approach to Unst Airport The last scheduled flights here were in 2001, and the airport is now disused (apart from a few emergency helicopter flights). The signs forbidding access (which I took rather more seriously than necessary) make me think that it was originally established for the military, as the closest airstrip to Saxa Vord.
