Lang Loch is a picturesque freshwater loch located in the Shetland Islands, Scotland. Nestled amidst the rugged and scenic landscape, it serves as a tranquil haven for both wildlife and visitors alike. The loch stretches approximately 1.5 kilometers in length and covers an area of around 10 hectares.

Surrounded by rolling hills and heather-covered moorland, Lang Loch boasts crystal-clear waters that shimmer under the ever-changing Shetland skies. The loch is fed by small streams and springs, ensuring a constant flow of fresh water. Its depth ranges from a few meters to around 15 meters in certain areas, providing a diverse habitat for various aquatic species.

The loch's shores are adorned with a mix of vegetation, including reeds, grasses, and wildflowers. This lush vegetation provides a perfect breeding ground for a wide array of waterfowl, such as mallards, tufted ducks, and grebes. Visitors can often spot these birds gracefully gliding across the calm waters or diving beneath the surface in search of food.

Lang Loch is also home to an abundance of fish, including brown trout and pike. Anglers are drawn to its tranquil waters, hoping to catch a prized specimen. The loch's healthy fish population is largely due to the presence of submerged vegetation, providing ample hiding places and a source of food.

Visitors to Lang Loch can enjoy its natural beauty by walking along the scenic shores or embarking on a boat trip. The tranquil atmosphere and stunning surroundings make it a popular spot for nature photographers, birdwatchers, and those seeking a peaceful retreat amidst the raw beauty of the Shetland Islands.

Fish farm boat, Gunnista Voe A rather steep and rough track (I'd have attempted it in a Mini in my youth, but rather more circumspect in middle age, high clearance 4-wheel drive seemed a better idea) reaches this small quay on Gunnista Voe, which is occupied by fish farming installations. We were prospecting for a place to put on with sea kayaks, and this seemed a little too awkward, though it was the only place near the water with adequate parking in the vicinity.
